  Tackling green issues

INTEL Malaysia together with the Penang Department of Fisheries, Penang Department of Wildlife, Taman Negara Pulau Pinang and the Penang Tourist Guides Association recently collaborated to organise an educational environemental camp.

Slow and steady: Camp participants watch as the turtle with the satellite transmitter mounted on its back, moves away.

The Intel Malaysia Biodiversity Education Camp 2009 drew over 130 participants including Intel volunteers, students and teachers from participating schools in Penang and in Kulim, Kedah.

Students not only learnt about local wildlife and conservation efforts, but also took part in various activities.

They included talks on the environment, beach patrolling, bird watching, jungle trekking and witnesssed the release of 272 baby turtles and a mother turtle with a satellite transmitter.

The satellite transmitter mounted on the turtle will allow the department to track and study the movement patterns of the turtle.

To the participants’ delight, the mother turtle was found at Teluk Kampi where she laid a total of 99 eggs on the last day of the camp, according to officials from the Penang Fisheries Department.

Intel Malaysia corporate services manager K. W. Lee said that the objective of the activities was to allow students to discover different habitats and experience the country’s nature reserves.

“In the process, they will learn about the importance and value of conserving the environment and marine life,” he added.

The volunteers also visited participating schools to brief over 3,500 students on the importance of marine conservation.

The three-day, two-night camp was part of Intel Malaysia Marine Conservation Programme, which was launched in June to celebrate World Environment Day 2009.

The objective of the programme was to increase the awareness level of employees as well as students and teachers on issues that impact marine life.

Coinciding with the camp was another project carried under the marine conservation programme — the launch of a brand new turtle hatchery at the Kerachut Beach Turtle Conservancy in Penang.

The hatchery was made possible from funds amounting to RM13,000 that was collected during a two-week donation drive by Intel employees.
